As I write (mid January) there is a serious debate between London and Edinburgh about the Scottish Nationalist Party’s intention to hold a referendum on the subject of independence and the future of the United Kingdom. This necessarily involves discussions about all sorts of issues including currency, defence and sovereignty including, obviously, the Sovereign.

Nottingham’s fourth annual Light Night is to be held on Friday 10th February around Nottingham city centre. St Mary’s and St Peter’s will be playing a part in the celebrations hosting a number of events and artistic displays.

All three principal morning services in the parish observe the traditional Act of Remembrance on this day, when we remember all those who have died, and those who continue to fight, in conflicts across the world.  A silence is observed  at 11am (the time, on 11th November 1918, when the armistice was signed between the Allies of World War I and Germany, ceasing hostilies and bringing World War I to an end).  The services at St Mary's and at St Peter's are led by the church choirs, and include the traditional bugle calls to signify the start and end of the two minute silence.  The Eucharist is celebrated at St Mary's at 6.30pm, in a solemn service in commemoration of the faithful departed that includes Gabriel Fauré's moving setting of the Requiem Mass.

Regular members of the Tuesday 1.15pm lunchtime congregation at St Peter's have recently participated in a small questionnaire about the lunchtime services. Different types of services have been trialed over the last year, with a mixed response. The plan now is to have a communion service each week, except the fourth Tuesday of each month, which will be a reflective service with poetry and music.
