THE ORGANS AND ORGANISTS OF ST MARY’S.
A history by the Honorary Archivists of St. Mary’s Church, Andrew Abbott and John Whittle, with a foreword by Sir David Lumsden (a former organist and Choirmaster).
A fascinating account of the story of the various organs and organists over four hundred years. The research for the book has drawn upon the original sources of information as far as possible to present an accurate record of the instruments and the musicians. It includes for the first time many rare and previously unpublished drawings, photographs and contemporary evidence to support previous accounts.
“This is as comprehensive a history as one could wish to have. The acknowledgements reveal the amount of work that goes into a book which is as comprehensively researched and conscientiously produced as this one is.” Dominic Gwynn, Organists’ Review November 1993
The contents include organs and repairs by Dallam, Swabrick, Snetzler, Rouse, Buckingham, Lloyd & Dudgeon, Bishop & Starr, J W Walker & Sons, Yates, Grant Degens & Bradbeer and Marcussen and Son. There are biographies of eighteen organists from 1705 to the present day, and a transcription of the desperate attempt of a local man to be appointed organist on two separate occasions in the 1830’s against the preference of the Vicar.
