All Saints’ Bell Ringing

NUSCR (Nottingham University Society of Change Ringers) has had a busy past year at All Saints. Our activities have included ringing for All Saints Sunday Services, special occasions and hosting the Northern Universities Association weekend in November for 100 students from across the country. This year also marks the 50th Anniversary of the Society and therefore, in order to celebrate a full weekend was planned in February for members both past and present. This included a tour of four local churches (Southwell, East Bridgford, Bingham and Radclffe-on-Trent) during the day on the Saturday, culminating in a celebratory Dinner in The Ballroom of Nottingham’s Council House.

With 131 people in attendance, the evening included a champagne reception, delicious three course meal, fun ceilidh dance, handbell ringing and speeches covering the events of the last year in the Society, including the Secretary’s which was done in rhyme! Furthermore, Dr Ray Ayres was invited as the guest speaker and provided a thoughtful speech about the Society’s links to Taylors, Eayre and Smith, the bell foundry that has a long association with the Society.

Sunday service ringing and breakfast concluded what proved to be a very successful weekend, according to all concerned. The weekend provided the perfect opportunity for members from all decades to catch up and share memories, some of whom had not seen each other for over 30 years! The night was one that will be remembered for many years into the future and we are all looking forward to the next 50 years!
