Laurie is a former school teacher and Headmaster, having worked both in England and Kenya. He is now retired, but whilst teaching he was Head of English at a school in Kent before going to Kenya with the Ministry of Overseas Development, where he taught English to pre-University level in local Government High Schools, prior to being appointed Headmaster of a Christian Primary School in Nairobi.
Laurie was licensed as a Lay Reader in the Anglican Church in Kenya in 1987, before returning to England in 1991, and was appointed to be Lay Minister at St Andrew's Church, in Stapleford from 1993 to 1997. Since 1997, he has been part of the ministering team at St Peter's.
A member of the Diocesan Synod for a number of years, Laurie is currently Lay Chair of the Nottingham South Deanery Synod. He has also been a volunteer Chaplain at the Nottinghamshire Hospice for a number of years.
