The original organ at St Peter's was probably built by Lincoln in 1812 and lived on the gallery under the tower until 1878, when it was moved to the chamber on the north side of the chancel. By 1952 it had deteriorated badly and Fenton Wragg overhauled it, adding much material from the organ of St Columba's Church, Mansfield Road. Further overhauls and additions were made by Henry Willis in 1964 and Hill, Norman & Beard in 1983, but by the end of the 20th century there were further problems as much of the mechanism was wearing out. The additions over the years had not solved the problem of the organ being enclosed in a chamber with only two small arches to let the sound out. In particular, the pipes of the Pedal division were tucked away at the back of the chamber and could not be heard properly. When the electronics in the console failed in November 2007 it seemed unwise to spend any more money on the instrument.

Despite setbacks over the past few months, work on the new organ for St Peter's is now in its final stages, and we hope that the organ will be used for the first time during the church's Christmas celebrations.  Come and see and hear this remarkable new instrument for yourself!

Congratulations to Andrew Davys, who successfully completed the Coast to Coast walk, in aid of the organ appeal, last month. Andrew raised an incredible £4,374. The 192 mile walk from St Bees to Robin Hoods Bay was very challenging for Andrew, but he had lots of support from all at St Peter’s, and he overcame the pain and exhaustion to achieve this amazing accomplishment. Well done, Andrew!

It is with great disappointment that the Organ Festival Weekend advertised at St Peter's for 20th and 21st November has had to be postponed. We have been very seriously let down by one of the partners involved in the build, and despite many difficult conversations over the past two weeks, the situation cannot be rectified in time for the planned celebrations. Whereas the pipes and new casework now stand tantalizingly in the chancel balcony and behind the restored North Aisle case, the organ's console still languishes in a factory in Oregon, awaiting a final, but vital, piece of equipment. It is this that has required the dreadfully disappointing decision to postpone the Bishop's dedication and the David Briggs recital. Instead, the new organ will be brought into commission over the next couple of months and we hope, following some words of blessing at a morning service, used during the Advent and Christmas season. The formal dedication will be rescheduled for the New Year, and the February gala series of Coffee Break Concerts will go ahead as planned, starting with the gala recital given by Paul Hale, who has been of tremendous support during this difficult time. David Briggs has agreed to reschedule his recital and 2011 dates are being explored.

Construction work began this week in the St Peter's organ loft. Modular Pipe Organ Systems are now mid-way through the construction of the Great and Choir organ chests, and the new Choir organ casework has been erected. See the photo page for Michael Leuty's photo diary of the construction.

Visitors and members of the congregation will notice that the newly restored eighteenth century front pipes from the North Aisle case have now been reinstated. Installation of the new organ will continue during the latter half of October - watch out in particular for the new console and the new Choir organ case in the chancel balcony! Fundraising continues as the appeal is still some £10,000 from its target.
