New chapter at St Peter’s as Bishop opens Fair Trade & Christian Book Shop - Thursday 27th November 2014

The Bishop of Sherwood officially opened a new Christian book and gift shop at St Peter’s Church, Nottingham.

The Rt Revd Tony Porter said: “Despite the many other distractions in our complex world of 2014, a Christian bookshop in the heart of the city is vital and I am delighted to share in this opening today.

“It says to the people of Nottingham you can come here, find out something about Jesus and be treated with dignity.”

There has been a small Traidcraft shop in what was originally a store cupboard under the stairs at the cafe next to St Peter’s for a number of years.

It was not easy for volunteers to operate from such a confined space, and the stock could not be displayed very effectively so the idea was born to expand the shop into a Christian book and gift shop, especially now that there is no other Christian book shop in the centre of Nottingham.

The funds to do this came from an old St Peter's Trust fund, which includes educational purposes within its terms.

Church architect Peter Rogan designed the shop, with the help and support of St Peter's and All Saints' site committee.

The work was carried out over two weeks in August when the coffee shop was closed, and the newly-expanded shop now carries a range of books, toys, cards, jewellery, bags, scarves, glassware and Fairtrade products.

The Revd Christopher Harrison, Vicar of the parish of All Saints, St Mary and St Peter, Nottingham, said: “The idea to expand emerged from an awareness that when the Oasis bookshop closed there was no Christian bookshop in the centre of Nottingham.

“We were aware that there was space here and it was a natural development of the Fairtrade shop.”
