As we move towards Advent, the annual sale of Christmas cards began at St Peter’s on 25th October. In the last five years charities have received over £20 million from their card sales through Cards for Good Causes outlets. Please support the charities of your choice by purchasing Christmas cards from their stall at St Peter’s, which is open Monday-Friday 10.30am-3.30pm, and Saturday 10.30am-4pm.

The art exhibition, which has been running at St Mary’s during October, has been a great success. The work on display was of a very high standard, and we hope that this will be the beginning of the development of St Mary’s as an art exhibition centre in the city, connecting the arts and spirituality. With its close proximity to "Nottingham Contemporary" art gallery, the church already benefits from extra visitors, and we hope that this relationship will continue.

Congratulations to Andrew Davys, who successfully completed the Coast to Coast walk, in aid of the organ appeal, last month. Andrew raised an incredible £4,374. The 192 mile walk from St Bees to Robin Hoods Bay was very challenging for Andrew, but he had lots of support from all at St Peter’s, and he overcame the pain and exhaustion to achieve this amazing accomplishment. Well done, Andrew!

The third in the series of City Debates took place at St Peter’s Church on Thursday 14th October. The guest speaker, Larry Elliott (Economics Editor of The Guardian) spoke to the audience about the issues surrounding the current economic crisis, and how we, as a society, can expect to recover from it. Larry has recently co-authored a book with Archbishop Rowan Williams, copies of which were available to buy and were signed by Larry on the night. We hope to host another City Debate early next year.

All three principal morning services in the parish observe the traditional Act of Remembrance on this day, when we remember all those who have died, and those who continue to fight, in conflicts across the world.  A silence is observed  at 11am (the time, on 11th November 1918, when the armistice was signed between the Allies of World War I and Germany, ceasing hostilies and bringing World War I to an end).  The services at St Mary's and at St Peter's are led by the church choirs, and include the traditional bugle calls to signify the start and end of the two minute silence.  The Eucharist is celebrated at St Mary's at 6.30pm, in a solemn service in commemoration of the faithful departed that includes Gabriel Fauré's moving setting of the Requiem Mass.
